Caves...

I have really come to enjoy going into show caves. Each cave I have visited is listed below. There are a few small notes for each and a link to one of my favorite pictures from my visit. In addition, there is a webpage for each cave with more details, pictures, and links. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to email me wxstar3@weatherfriend.com

Cosmic Caverns Arkansas

Last visited: June 2004

Photo notes: Tripods allowed

Notes:

This cave is a very enjoyable cave. There is a river that flows through it and creates an atmosphere unlike the other caves I've been in. The tour has several formations to view including some very nice soda straws.

Mystic & Crystal Caves Arkansas

Last visited: June 2004

Photo notes: Tripods allowed

Notes:

This is actually two caves for the price of one! Both caves are enjoyable. You can clearly see the damage caused by humans in one cave which is quite sad, but the formations are still astonishing. There are soda straws, rim pools, stalagmites, stalactites, draperies, cave bacon, cave pearls, domes, many helictites, columns and  more.

Hurricane River Cave Arkansas

Last visited: June 2004

photo notes: Tripod allowed

Notes:

In this cave you literally walk through a riverbed. There are some tight spaces, so no backpacks is suggested. OH, and hopefully the waterfall will be on when you get there...kinda not cool to have them walk over and turn it on. It use to be a natural waterfall, but needs help now.

Notes:

Part of this cave is a walk the other a boat ride. Quite a neat experience if you can visit. There is a natural Waterfall inside.

Notes:

This is a very tight cave. It has lots of popcorn formations and some large columns.

Mammoth Cave National Park Kentucky

Last visited: June 2004

Photo notes: Cameras welcome, but no camera bags, backpacks, or tripods

Notes:

This is the largest cave in the world and it has a great variety of tours. We took the travertine tour which was quite enjoyable, but we had wished it was longer. There were many formations, but one also sees damage to the formations by lights being on them. They are in the process of trying to switch over to lights that do not promote algae.

Hidden River Cave Kentucky

Last visited: June 2004

Photo notes: Tripod allowed. Not much to photograph except entry into darkness.
Notes:

This is basically a hole in the ground. This cave has a very nice museum to it, but once inside its about a 10 min walk...if that much. 230 steps lead down....and you must go up the way you came down.
